DEALING WITH DISRUPTIVE STUDENTS IN THE ENGLISH CLASSROOM

Foreign language classroom management: Types of student misbehavior and strategies adopted by the teachers in handling disruptive behavior

Abstract: This study investigates the types of student misbehavior exhibited in foreign language classrooms and the strategies preferred by foreign language teachers to prevent them. The study additionally explores whether foreign language teachers preferred strategies correspond with their actual classroom practices. 44 teachers of English at the English preparatory schools of three universities participated in the study.

 Semi-structured interviews and observations were used to gather data. The findings illustrate different types of student behavior in foreign language classrooms, some of which are similar to those in general teaching subjects, and some which are specific to foreign language classrooms. Themes including using one’s mother tongue, asking irrelevant questions, using a mobile phone, excessive talking, and lack of willingness to participate as part of low motivation are important misbehavior types in foreign language classrooms. Teachers’preferred strategies to handle student misbehavior are the most effective and include the use of body language, not administering punishment, and being positive. It is also reported that teachers often fail to follow through with their proposed strategies when dealing with disruptive behavior.

    As teachers we have to look for activities that they like and that we can adapt what we want to teach through those activities. In one of the practices that we had with my partner, we saw a student with disruptive behavior and we were struck by the good handling that the teacher had with him and with the rest of the students. She didn't exclude him but asked him to help her since he was already done with the task. This meant that he did not distract the rest of the class and he kept himself busy.

  3. I think that we should use activities that interest them (books, sports, music, etc) that can be adapted to the knowledge and different topics we want to teach. I think that at first it will be “difficult” for us to become an authority figure in front of our future students, but if a situation requires that we have to call attention to an disruptive student, we should talk to them in an respectful manner and also try to make them understand the situation and that they are disrupting a class instead of screaming at them and excluding them from the rest of the class because doing that won't solve the problem, the student will probably continue to disrupt and bother the class.

    Some ways we could take to prevent children from being exclude in the society: a) Not to give up with challenging children. We all were once children, challenging or not. We once had teachers who believed on us, and that we trusted on. Be that teacher for your students, the one they know will arrive at home and will nor forget them. It's not about making the students feel special, is to be aware they are, and making they to know it. Recognize they are human being and that they have rights, fears and needs. In the video, the woman says something about working with "missing skills". So do it. Remember many children in public and private school have these "missing skills" and we may often feel offended because of they and their misbehavior, but it's not their fault haven't been taught with these skills (respect, the order, trust, confidence, etc) We must be the teacher who teach it without making the children feel like a burden.

  5. I think it's very important to listen to this experiences. Teachers not only have to be prepared for teaching, also they have to deal with this kind of situasions in the classrooms. It's good to have different extra tasks in order to include these students like helpers or look for activities much more easier or use pictures that could be more attractives for them.

    One idea to keep children occupied after they have finished their activity is to have a list of "bonus" or extension activities that they can choose from. These activities could be related to the content they are learning, or they could be fun and creative activities that engage their minds. For example, they could create a poster or write a story about what they learned, or they could do a hands-on project that enhances their understanding of the subject matter. Having a variety of options available allows children to choose an activity that interests them and keeps them occupied while the rest of the class is finishing up their work. Additionally, these activities can help reinforce what they have learned and foster their creativity and critical thinking skills.

  7. Sometimes one of our obstacles as teacher and especially when we have to deal with disruptive students is that our planned activities are not useful or helpful to them. So we might have to adapt or incoporate activities to develop social-emotional skills such as self-regulation, relationship and communication skills, and decision-making in order to teach and receive an educational progress.

This is a very challenging situation that teachers must deal with, first we need to know our students what they like and what they don’t like and then must try to find a way to incorporate those elements into the class. Another thing that we can do if we see a student being excluded is to give them another task to do or ask them to help prepare the activity. Or we can pare them with another student or make them work in smalls groups. Sometimes as teachers we need to find the strategy that suits better our students.

  10. What attracted me most to the text was being positive as a strategy to avoid student misbehaviour. An idea that occurs to me could contribute to this strategy is that when leading with disruptive students, an activity could be done where the rules of coexistence in the classroom are remembered.

You discussed motivation, rapport between the teacher and the students,the respect of rules in the classroom....you also talked about being human particularly to those students who need special care and attention.   19. For disruptive students you have to call them by their first name and no their surmane, it is more familiar. The most important is to make eye contact during the class and use humor in a positive way. You can tell anecdotes during explanations.
    I think we should use activities that interest them. (We could ask before what are their interest)

    It's important to understand that this profession will be challenging most of the times, we need to understand that we are here for the kids. This is not only because of the way of teaching, we will work with humans being, so apart from to give them the best of us in the process of learning, we will deal with some extra issues rwlated to students behaviour, and we will think that it's not our business, but it is, it is part of our job to give them support and listen to them.

In general, the students that are problematic or challenging are put aside, not taking them account, and simply calling them annoying, instead of looking the way to including in the class. It is important look for strategies to make them feel attracted to participate and be part of the class.
    Setting rules is an interesting idea to manage this behavior, explain them to the students why they can or cannot do in the classroom, give them a reason, it helps them to understand why they shouldn’t act in a way they do, rather than just knowing that some things are forbidden. I also like the idea of remind the students the rules in a positive manner.
    This the rules can not only be a proposal for the teacher, but also can be a proposal for the students, which made the children disturb what kind of rules they like to follow in the class, and then come to an understanding.

  24. I think we should make our best in order to prepare engaging classes, create a good atmosphere in our classrooms and give our students positive feedbacks. However we must remember we are not going to change the material conditions in which our learners live. We live in a world based on exclusion and it's beyond our possibilities to change it. So we must deal with this kind of "contradiction" of working inside the educational system which main principles regard being "inclusive" and at the same time to live in a system which main rule is to divide people according to what they have, excluding those who don't have, no matter what they need.

  25. The strategy of "No punishment" is the one that caught my attention, because i actually think that nowadays children dont care about punishments and i think its better to offer them any type of reward if they at least show some interest in the lesson or if they respect the classroom rules.
    After watchingt the video I realized that the most important thing we can do to prevent children from being excluded of the society is to see them not only as students but also as persons, who have different backgrounds and less skills to deal with different issues. We need to show respect to them and create a bond of trust.

  26. We, as teachers, have to be prepared to confront this kind of conflict. It’s not easy but it’s not an option to give up on a child with challenging behaviour, after all that’s what we are learning here. It’s always a good idea to include them or to have activities in which they feel included. Also have the ability to improvise and adapt in the case the planned activity is not working with them. We need to make them feel safe, if they feel safe they’ll be more relaxed and willing to learn

  27. It is important that we can learn how to deal with students with misbehaviour. Like in the video it is said, we do not have to exclude them (this is a must). I have students with disruptive behaviour and something that helps me a lot is to work in groups. All students like to help their classmates and by doing this we can integrate that student and make them learn and stay in the course of the lesson. Sometimes is incredible to see that particular student very concentrated and doing the activities. It is a difficult task for teachers but not impossible!
