THE ROLE OF INTERACTION IN ELT
Many times we are not aware that our speaking time in our English classroom is too long, and we don't
create opportunities to allow our students to express themselves. We should foster not only student-
teacher interaction but also student-student interaction. Giving positive feedback, enhancing our time
management skills, and increasing motivation is crucial to make the students eager to participate.
But why is peer interaction so important?
Well, for one thing, learners in peer-to-peer contexts get to talk more frequently. They have longer
turns, and more of them build on each other's knowledge. This is quite different from teacher-teacher
interactions. In fact, research has shown that in peer interactions learners exhibit much greater
complexity in their language and variety when compared to speaking to native speakers. Yet, what's
more important to remember here is that in these situations learners are not just practicing using the
language. They are communicating and experimenting, taking risks, and making mistakes.-core criteria
for successful language learning. This is possible because learners are in control of their language
learning and can create a space where they feel safe to play with the language and consolidate their
knowledge.
But how can we encourage students to participate in our Language classes? Watch the videos and find out !!
