  1. Using Favorite Songs and Poems
with Young Learners, by Caroline Linse

The use of songs and poems in early childhood education is a powerful tool for engaging children and enhancing language development. The text highlights the benefits of incorporating these creative forms of expression into lessons and provides practical methods for doing so, such as using actions and puppets to make learning more interactive and more enjoyable for students. Allowing children to create their own versions of songs and poems not only promotes creativity but also strengthens language skills. Incorporating songs and poems into early childhood education has the potential to make a positive impact on children's learning experiences and overall development.

  3. Helping Prospective EFL Teachers Learn How to Use Songs in Teaching Conversation Classes. Natalia F. Orlova.

I think that incorporating songs when learning English is a very good way of getting the interest of the pupils since everyone loves music. This way, you can also let students have some freedom in their learning when letting them choose a song to bring to the classroom.
Music is versatile, we can include a lot of concepts and there are so many benefits from including music in classes because it is possible to learn vocabulary, grammar, speaking, listening comprehension, etc, with them. But also it helps to formulate a critical evaluation of the topic and then discuss it. My high school teacher sometimes used to make activities with songs and I loved it!

  4. Hello! Here my comments about Caroline Linse. I can see she's written various book for younger learners, all of them with beautiful illustrations that may help students to understand them better. Also, she seems to be determined to not to give very difficult instructions for understanding, and her suggestions when reading a poem are very clear. The ideas she provides to accompany the reading are really helpful. The puppets, virtual tools, innovations a personal songbooks are great.

  5. Using Favorite Songs and Poems with Young Learners

    By Caroline Linse

The author emphasizes the use of songs for young learners. Linse says that songs and poems are an excellent way to begin or end a lesson. It helps to warm up the beginning of the class and children enjoy this time. A positive aspect of using songs to learn is vocabulary. You can teach almost any kind of vocabulary by using songs or poems. Adding any actions/moves or little dances to the song can also help children learn unfamiliar vocabulary and to remember the context of the lesson. An interesting idea is to let the students create their songbooks. They can copy them from the board or they can write them on their own.

As a teacher, I use this resource, especially with young learners. They love when I tell them I bring a song for the lesson. The students get the vocabulary faster than in textbooks. Something very important is that they have fun and enjoy the action of learning.

  6. Hello I have chosen this text because Music can be considered a form of literature because it shares several key characteristics with written literature. While music and literature are different art forms, they both involve the creative use of language. Music can be literature because it expresses ideas and emotions, it contains narrative elements, symbolism and metaphors.

Like literature, music reflects the cultural and historical contexts in which it is created. Songs often capture the spirit of a particular era, address social issues, or reflect the values and beliefs of a specific community. It can be analyzed and interpreted in much the same way as literature.

While music and literature are distinct art forms, they share common ground in their ability to communicate and evoke emotions.

  9. I have chosen Dale T. Griffee. He works as a teacher at the University of Pittsburgh ELI, Tokyo. In the text "Hey Baby! Teaching Short and Slow Songs in the ESL Classroom" he talks about four techniques about using popular songs in the language classroom. These techniques are: 1) Tell them a story, as a way of introducing a story song; 2) Strip songs, a technique that provides students with the lyrics; 3) Paraphrasing, as a way of working with vocabulary and meaning; and 4) Point of view, a discussion technique for students at the intermediate and above levels.

In text the author says that poems and songs are part of early childhood education in the US. Songs or poems can help teachers to start or end a class, it’s a very fun and eye calling way to catch the kids into the lesson. The author also says that there are several ways that this can be presented to children by using props (objects or images), by doing actions while singing. Also using puppets with the things/vocabulary that are mentioned in the song or poem helps the children to remember the words and associate them.

  21. “ The value of Music in education” TED-Talk by Richard Gill

In this talk the author explains several benefits of using music in teaching. He argues that music has the capacity of engaging children in the first “oral experience” as they need to listen to repeat then. Here we can establish a strong comparison with the language learning process.

Considering the nature of music he adds that abstraction is not a disadvantage, on the contrary it offers the chance to understand sounds in our own way. Music evokes different responses in each person as it doesn´t describe nor narrate. It evokes, suggests, opens up the mind of our learners. This characteristic of music offers children the chance to move into a special world of thinking.

Then he clarify that the most important thing about music is not to repeat but to create our own music. This is another similarity I can see with the language learning process, as we need to receive imput firstly to move forward and be able to create our own “messages” later.

Every little child has the capacity of singing, by singing is how we teach them to be literate. Finally he insists that music beyond all these benefits is worth teaching for its own sake, because its good, unique and empower children spectacularly.

  22. Helping Prospective EFL Teachers Learn How to Use Songs in Teaching Conversation Classes By Natalia F. Orlova.

I think that learning a language through music is a very fun and easy way to practice intonation, vocabulary, rhythm, stress and writing skills. Music helps train the brain to recognize foreign language words and sounds, because we can hear different accents and pronunciations in music in songs. It is a creative way to learn, and there are many activities that can be implemented in the classroom with students. I agree with the author when she says that learning with music is very popular among young students. I used to have a teacher at school who would give us some activities with music to do in his classes, and that was my favorite task, I really enjoyed it.
I find the model of speech development through songs that the author gives in his text very interesting and useful to do in class.
